without double work for the bookkeeper.
Sending an invoice to Exact is not the hard part. The hard part is that Exact is an accounting package: every line needs a ledger account, a VAT code and a journal, and every account has to exist exactly once. Get that wrong and your bookkeeper spends the end of the quarter untangling it.
Where Exact integrations break.
Duplicate accounts
Every order creates a new customer because the lookup is by name. A few months in, the same customer exists five times, with open items spread across all five.
VAT codes are guessed
Standard, reduced, reverse charge, intra-EU. Sending a fixed percentage is not the same as the right VAT code from your administration, and the VAT return notices the difference.
Rounding differences
Your system calculates VAT over the total, Exact per line, or the other way around. The invoice is off by a few cents and the payment no longer matches the open item.
The integration stops after a while
Access tokens expire quickly and the refresh token is replaced on every refresh. Lose the new one, or let two processes refresh at once, and someone has to log in again.
Rate limits are ignored
Exact limits the number of API calls per administration, per minute and per day. An initial import or a sync that fetches everything every time runs into that quickly.
Errors vanish
An invoice is rejected because a ledger account does not exist, and nobody sees it. The bookkeeper only finds out when revenue does not add up.

Bookkeeping first, then code
With you or your bookkeeper I decide which ledger accounts, VAT codes and journals belong to which products and customer types. That becomes a fixed mapping, not an assumption in the code.
One direction where possible
Usually your system is the source for customers and invoices and Exact is the source for payment status. True two-way sync is possible, but then every field needs a clear rule for who wins a conflict.
Only fetch what changed
Exact has webhooks for some topics. Where that is not enough I periodically fetch only the changed records, so the sync stays within your administration's limits.
OAuth and errors handled properly
Tokens are refreshed in one place and stored securely. Every failed booking lands in an overview with the reason, so you see it before the bookkeeper does.
